Artist's Comments

A personal canvas work (first I've done in years).

This started out as a self-portrait with a mandolin, but a number of the distinct features would have distracted from the lines (long neck, glasses, beard and hair (and a lot of the latter two)). In the end, the mandolin, hat and purple jacket are mine, but the face isn't.

For mandolin fans the chord is F7, and the mandolin is a Flat-iron, A-Type by Amada/Cremona of Luby, Czechoslovakia (now in the Czech Republic) which I've had for... a few years. Originally the figure was going to be picking out a tune, but the instrument in question is better suited to chords (I've a Florian M30 or an Ozark 2243 Bouzouki for picking out a tune).

I've browsed your gallery, and i tell you right now : now that you've secreted Mandolin, you can tear up all your drawings :) It's a kind of masterpiece, really powerful. I regret that my English is not good enough to say much and disclose my feelings...

THANK YOU. Unfortunately this style doesn't sell well as illustrations go... hence the rest... the pieces I've made the most on were mock-neo-plasticist (similar aesthetics but non-figurative) but the colours there were much more restricted (the commission was based on the colours of the clients new decor, but it paid well). It's nice to have the chance to paint the rainbow once more...

It was a piece that i'd kicking about in my head for quite a while, since I took a trip home and saw the piece of mine Time that I'd done over a decade earlier, which was done when I'd only a tin whistle, a harmonica, a bodhran, an acoustic guitar and this mandolin. Years ago when I didn't have to worry about waking the neighbours...
